Who is Gilgamesh?
The first King,Gilgamesh is the mythical King of the Sumerians, who reigned in the town
of Uruk. He was more divine than human and he was well-known for the
cruelty of his government. He wanted all the young warriors to hardly
train to become perfect soldiers, creating a sort of hate in his
regards by everyone, at least until he meets Enkidu, a mysterious and savage creature made by the gods, whom he can’t defeat despite his
great skills in combat.
Gilgamesh and Enkidu make a friendship pact and they decide to go out
the town for a quest, or well cutting some trees and bringing back
those most beautiful and valuable, which leads them in a particular
forest guarded by the monster Hubaba. As they enter in the garden they
are immediately caught by the monster but they’re able to defeat him
and come back to Uruk successfully.
Gilgamesh offers the prize to the goddess Ishtar who, noticing his
courage and handsomeness, decides to propose herself as his spouse, but the
king refuses (as he knows Ishtar is used to love someone only for a
short time and she’s always able to condemn the abandoned husband if
she wishes to punish him). Ishtar, who is offended by Gilgamesh asks to
her father Anu to entrust her the Bull of Heaven and she sends the
beast through the streets of Uruk, letting it kill and destroy
everything in its way.
Enkidu fights twice against the bull, at first alone, and later with
the help of Gilgamesh who kills it by stabbing it on its head, between
its horns. However,there victory celebrations were meaningless as Enkidu dies because the Goddess Ishtar's commanded his death out of hatred and jealousy. Gilgamesh feels sorrow for losing his dear friend and desperation
for the first time in his whole life. He becomes afraid of dying and he decides to look in the Netherworld for the Elixir of Immortality.After a great deal of hardship he obtains it but while Gilgamesh took a bath before returning to his country,a snake drank the potion, and Gilgamesh died of grief.
